Funding, grant and donor agreements

Brings restricted money into an organisation, with strings that outlive the project.

What it does

Brings restricted money into an organisation, with strings that outlive the project.

Must contain

The funded purpose and the budget it is tied to; disbursement tranches and the conditions for each; the reporting calendar and the format; permitted variation between budget lines; audit and inspection rights; the treatment of interest earned and of unspent funds; intellectual property in what the grant produces; branding and acknowledgement; anti-bribery, sanctions and safeguarding undertakings; and the consequence of misuse.

What to look out for

Unspent funds and interest are where grant relationships end badly — say now whether they are returned, rolled over or retained. And an organisation holding restricted funds must be able to show them separately in its records: a grant agreement that assumes fund accounting the grantee does not practise creates a reporting failure that looks like a financial one.
