Remote and hybrid work policy

Governs work done away from the employer’s premises.

What it does

Governs work done away from the employer’s premises.

How it is drafted

Cover eligibility and the approval process; hours, availability and the right to be unavailable; equipment, data costs and who bears them; the home workstation and the employer’s health and safety duty; information security and the acceptable-use overlap; supervision and performance measurement; and the notice required to change or end the arrangement.

What to look out for

Health and safety duties do not stop at the office door, and neither does POPIA — a household printer and an unlocked laptop are a processing risk the employer remains responsible for. If remote work has been in place long enough to have become a term of employment, changing it unilaterally is a change to terms and conditions, not a management instruction.
